The IMA World Fellowship assists physicians planning to expand their professional studies abroad. For many years, the IMA and World Fellowship chapters, along with the Organization of Clalit physicians, the Organization of State Employee Physicians, Rambam Medical Center, Sheba Medical Center, the Sheba Medical Center Physicians’ Committee, have awarded grants and scholarships, which have enabled hundreds of Israeli physicians to accept fellowship positions overseas.
During their fellowships, these physicians have the unique opportunity to experience foreign medical systems, institutions and practices hands on and to serve as ambassadors of Israel and the Israeli medical field. Additionally, these scholarships strengthen the connection between World Fellowship members abroad and their Israeli colleagues.
Once a year, the World Fellowship Grants Committee convenes to evaluate prospective candidates.
Grants are awarded in June of each year and presented at a special ceremony attended by IMA leadership, grantees and their families along with representatives from the hospitals and organizations that have donated funds. Many grants are presented in memory of deceased physicians, adding another dimension to an already meaningful tradition. Speakers eulogize the physicians, and their loved ones are invited to attend.
Physicians are eligible for a scholarship if they have:
- Been IMA members for at least one year
- An Israeli Specialty Certification
- Secured a position for their return to Israel
- Secured a fellowship of 1-2 years at an accredited institution overseas
- Defined an area of specialization
