Organ donations and transplants is a sensitive and significant issue and we commend the legislature for taking upon itself the mission to institutionalize the issue.

We believe that as an enlightened society with values, we must prevent and oppose organ trading and therefore that monetary consideration for live organ donations should not be sanctioned in the State of Israel in 2005. We are convinced that the risk and negative ramifications of granting monetary consideration highly exceed the benefits. We propose that social commitment should be preserved by enabling consideration, not monetary, for organ donations from the deceased in order to position Israel in the international forefront of transplants and to enable the State and its doctors to realize the huge medical potential in the country.

We also maintain that the role and status of the President of the National Transplant Center must be consolidated as the position holder formulating transplant policy in the country along with his colleagues in the steering committee.

We are convinced that our position, derived from our familiarity with the issue and representing the position of the medical community, will be seriously considered and will enable all those involved in the issue to collaborate for the sake of the noble cause – to save the lives of hundreds of individuals every year.
