The Physician's Oath

The ancient version of the Physician's Oath (Greek) is attributed to Hippocrates, considered one of the greatest healers and philosophers of ancient Greece and the father of modern medicine.

Hippocrates, who was the first to attempt to formalize the medical profession and grant it legal status among the public, addressed many aspects of the moral dimension of medical treatment. His collection of writings includes the "Physician's Oath," which initially set out a series of ethical rules related to the practice of medicine.

Over time, the "Physician's Oath" formulated by Hippocrates was translated into many different languages, diverging from the original. However, certain motifs have been preserved. For example, the Hebrew Physician's Oath, composed by Dr. Lipman Ben Shlomo Heilprin, and the Physician's Prayer by Maimonides, include motifs from the original Greek Physician's Oath.
