During July-August 1998, we encountered 4 patients who suffered from syringomyelia. The diagnosis in each case could not be reached on clinical grounds only, since the characteristic thermoanalgesic dissociation was absent in all patients.
In each case the spinal MRI showed the typical intraspinal cystic lesion, which finally established the diagnosis and led to appropriate treatment.
